Ferrets used to be kept as pets in New Zealand, but in 2002 a new law was passed that banned the sale, distribution and breeding of ferrets. There are only a few people in New Zealand who have a special permit allowing them to keep pet ferrets for hunting rabbits.

Why are ferrets not allowed in New Zealand?

The threat ferrets pose to New Zealand’s vulnerable native species such as kiwi is too great to ignore. As potential carriers of TB they also put at risk our farming industry. They pose a biosecurity risk to the all too few ferret-free areas on the mainland and offshore islands, Ms Lee said.

Where are ferrets found in New Zealand?

In New Zealand they can be found at any altitude, in any kind of forest, exotic or native, in scrub, dunes and pasture. They are even known to occur near human settlements. In open country they are less common than ferrets, but in the forest they are much more common.

Why were weasels introduced to New Zealand?

Ferrets, stoats and weasels were originally introduced to New Zealand to help control rabbit numbers. However their own numbers have increased dramatically and created a separate problem because they also prey on native birds, eggs and chicks.

What pets are illegal in NZ?

You can’t bring in:

- live birds.

Does New Zealand have ferrets?

Stoats, weasels and ferrets, the only mustelids present in New Zealand, pose a serious threat to our threatened wildlife. In addition to New Zealand’s wild populations, ferrets are kept as domestic pets and farmed for export markets in Asia.

How do I get a ferret in NZ?

Traps used in NZ include the DOC type traps and Fenn type kill traps. Fenn traps were designed in England in the 1950s and are still an effective, low cost method of trapping stoats and ferrets. We recommend the MK4 kill trap for stoats and the MK6 kill trap for ferrets.

What countries are ferrets legal in?

From my current research, I’ve been able to make this list of where ferrets are allowed:

- Canada.

Are there weasels in New Zealand?

Stoats, weasels and ferrets, the only mustelids present in New Zealand, pose a serious threat to our threatened wildlife. In addition to New Zealand’s wild populations, ferrets are kept as domestic pets and farmed for export markets in Asia.

Where are weasels found in NZ?

Weasels are found in low numbers in most habitats in New Zealand. This mustelid poses a significant threat to native wildlife. By the mid 1870s, rabbits were becoming a serious agricultural pest in New Zealand. Farmers demanded that the natural enemies of the rabbit (mustelids) be introduced.

Why were ferrets stoats and weasels introduced to NZ?

Ferrets were introduced to New Zealand from Europe in the 1880s, along with stoats and weasels, to control rabbits that were breeding out of control.

How did weasels come to New Zealand?

How did they get here? Weasels were introduced in the late 1800s, along with stoats and ferrets, to control the rabbit population. They quickly spread across the country. For a while they were even protected by law (along with ferrets and stoats) because of their rabbit-controlling abilities.

Why were NZ pests introduced?

They were introduced into New Zealand in the late 1880s to try and control rabbits. It didn’t work and now rabbits and mustelids are both classed as pests in New Zealand.

Who brought stoats to NZ?

Large numbers of stoats (Mustela erminea) were brought from Britain in the 1870s to control ‘verminous rabbits’. Stoats are energetic, bold and versatile hunters, foraging in every hole, under any cover and up the tallest trees.

What exotic pets are legal in NZ?

Exotic Pets

- Axolotls.
