Paruresis is believed to be a common type of social phobia, ranking second only to the fear of public speaking. At a certain point, <b>the body senses that it is reaching a limit, which triggers the urge to urinate.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_causes_a_person_not_to_be_able_to_pee\"><\/span>What causes a person not to be able to pee?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Causes of urinary retention include an obstruction in the urinary tract such as an enlarged prostate or bladder stones, infections that cause swelling or irritation, nerve problems that interfere with signals between the brain and the bladder, medications, constipation, urethral stricture, or a weak bladder muscle.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_do_you_get_rid_of_a_shy_bladder\"><\/span>How do you get rid of a shy bladder?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Meditation and breathing exercises to help you control anxiety and relax your urinary tract. Urine produced in the kidneys travels down the ureters into the urinary bladder. The bladder expands like an elastic sac to hold more urine. As it reaches capacity, the process of micturition, or urination, begins.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_to_do_when_you_cant_pee\"><\/span>What to do when you cant pee?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>If you do have to force yourself, here are 10 strategies that may work:<\/b><\/p>\n<li>Run the water. Turn on the faucet in your sink.  <\/li>\n<li>Rinse your perineum.  <\/li>\n<li>Hold your hands in warm or cold water.  <\/li>\n<li>Go for a walk.  <\/li>\n<li>Sniff peppermint oil.  <\/li>\n<li>Bend forward.  <\/li>\n<li>Try the Valsalva maneuver.  <\/li>\n<li>Try the subrapubic tap.<\/li>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_happens_if_a_person_does_not_urinate\"><\/span>What happens if a person does not urinate?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t empty your bladder often enough, or go a couple of days without emptying it all the way, <b>it can result in a urinary tract infection (UTI). If you hold your pee as a matter of habit, your bladder can start to atrophy. Over time, you may develop incontinence.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_not_being_able_to_pee_an_emergency\"><\/span>Is not being able to pee an emergency?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>Urinary retention is considered an emergency medical condition because it disrupts the natural flow of urine, and the normal functioning of the urinary system. Urinary retention is extremely uncomfortable and will trigger severe pain as the bladder continues to stretch and fill with urine.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_shy_bladder_be_cured\"><\/span>Can shy bladder be cured?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>Shy bladder is a treatable condition. If you have shy bladder, you can reduce your anxiety and successfully urinate in public. However, the medical and mental health support required to get you to this goal may take time, which can be anywhere from months to years.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_do_you_fix_a_shy_bladder\"><\/span>How do you fix a shy bladder?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>Keep practising, with your pee partner getting closer and closer to the toilet. This may take several sessions over a period of time. Try to make as much noise as possible while urinating. It can be caused by conditions that affect the kidneys, bladder or prostate gland (in men). <b>Urinary tract infections, prostate problems, and kidney stones are common triggers for this problem to develop.
